I was recently at a Business Link meeting with over 100 attendees where the speaker asked 'Does anybody here find tax interesting?' Without thinking, I raised my hand (I was the only one). The speaker was surprised; he had asked that question hundreds of times before and nobody had ever responded positively. 'Are you an accountant by any chance?' he asked.
So there you have it, I think tax is fascinating! It is so because in the UK we have the most complicated tax system in the world AND it is constantly changing. This means that with something as fundamental as the trading medium you choose to operate your business through, i.e. sole trader, partnership or limited company may mean you could end up paying almost J2,500 more tax on profits of J40,000 by choosing to be a sole trader rather than a limited company in the current 2010/11 tax year. This tax differential will increase in April 2011 when NIC rates increase and Corporation Tax rates decrease.

To me this is what tax is all about. It is about helping the smaller business or individual to ensure that you receive the best possible tax advice I can offer. It is about building a relationship with you; it's about taking time to listen and making you feel comfortable in meeting 'the accountant'. Rather than it being an experience that you dread it should be an interesting experience for you (notice I did not say enjoyable, it is tax after all). In many instances you may be tempted to sort out your tax affairs yourself as' HMRC are very helpful these days and their website is terrific'. I have witnessed numerous occasions when professionally qualified accountants have advocated a course of action that fails to take account of basic tax issues. As indicated above the UK tax system is incredibly complex and you should seek professional assistance. In the words of the Chartered Institute of Taxation 'By the time you find out your tax advice was poor, so are you'.

Remember HMRC's responsibility is to ensure that you pay the correct amount of tax (a task that they appear to find extremely difficult to achieve just now); it is not their duty to ensure that you pay the minimum amount of tax.
