Initially, the firm was started by Derek Field on a part-time basis in 1966. His main occupation at the time was with a major client. However personal clients and companies approached him and the practice gradually built up. It deals with clients from the smallest sole trader to large multi-million pound companies. The firm has a sound base of UK clients. It also has strong ties with European clients and, in this respect, it deals with the requirements for companies and firms operating throughout the European Union. Place Campbell's history can be traced back to 1908 when a Mr Fairbrother commenced practising in East Grinstead as an accountant. Several years later, his practice was taken over by a Mr Richard Place, who was subsequently succeeded by his sons Geoffrey and Brian. The firm conducted a mixed practice and dealt with a variety of trades and professions. In 1947 our first contact was established with the Bar, when Brian Place accepted instructions from our first barrister. This initial contact proved successful and the number of barristers had increased to over 300 by 1978.
